Bangor

Welcome to a city like no other in New England. A destination filled with possibilities, and a gateway to myriad adventures. The city of Bangor, in the heart of Maine. Bangor offers visitors to Maine the best of both worlds: a friendly city that's filled with excitement and activity, and a gateway to the natural beauty of this great state.

Bangor MapThe city of Bangor (pop. 90,000; including surrounding communities) combines traditional New England charm with a very modern sensibility; an enriching balance that gives Bangor a unique quality of life. Bangor is the economic center for all of central, northern and Downeast Maine. The combination of opportunity, affordability and urban amenities continually attracts professionals and businesses to the Bangor area. Bangor's high livability quotient has been recognized in such national publications as Rand McNally's Places Rated Almanac, as well as Money and Psychology Today magazines.

The city is host to a broad array of cultural offerings, like the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Robinson Ballet Company, and the Maine Shakespeare Festival. The Maine Center for the Arts (on the UMaine campus is a world-class performance space that attracts national and international tours of entertainers, dancers and musicians.) Fine arts, folk crafts and historical archives abound in the Bangor area: The Museum of Art at the University of Maine campus, the Hudson Museum, the Cole Land Transportation Museum, and the Downtown Sidewalk Arts Festival are just a few of the attractions that entertain and enlighten. The new Maine Discovery Museum is the largest children's museum north of Boston, a world of discovery for the whole family. Just down the road in Bradley at the Leonard Mills Museum, you can step back in time to the way a settler's life used to be.

The Bangor Civic Center, Auditorium and Bass Park Complex host everything from antique and collectible shows, to concerts, conferences, harness racing, and major sporting events. Bass Park is also host to the annual Bangor State Fair. This agricultural event draws thousands to share in Maine's bounty. Bangor, and the Bass Park Complex, are magnets for major events, like the Navy's breathtaking Blue Angels, and the colorful 1992 Chrysler Trans-Atlantic Balloon Race.
