In the Snow

Snow Images

Frozen lakes under a perfect blanket of white. Tall evergreens laden with snow. Frosted hills, a clear sky and that particular hush in the air. This is winter the way you remember it, the way it should be. In The Maine Highlands we embrace this very special season, and for those who love winter sports you couldn't pick a better destination.
Break away from Maine's more crowded touring centers and let yourself experience the splendid isolation of The Maine Highlands' woods in winter.

Back-country skiing is everywhere in The Maine Highlands, with hundreds of miles of skiing available on rugged trails, lakes and ponds, in the woods and in state parks.

Several areas are available for groomed cross-country skiing. Top-notch areas are available in Monson, Millinocket, Palmyra, and many more. Contact a local chamber of commerce to obtain more information on groomed XC ski trails in their area.

Downhill aficionados can find all the thrills without all the lines, in Greenville, Hermon and Lee. Accommodation, instruction and equipment rentals are readily available for a trouble-free ski adventure.

Snowmobiling has a long and cherished history in The Maine Highlands. There are dozens of snowmobile clubs and outfitters throughout the region that provide rentals, repairs, maps and guide services. The Interstate Trail System and its tributaries (extending through the New England states all the way up to Canada!) connect clubs, restaurants and lodgings to allow riders a totally snowmobile-oriented touring and vacation experience. Feel the thrill of cruising over a frozen terrain or a well-groomed trail just once, and you'll be hooked for life!

Then of course, there's that completely unique experience known as ice fishing! Not for the faint of heart, this is a sport and a recreation like no other. Let the local experts set you up in an ice house, get it well stocked, then kick back and enjoy a very Maine tradition. A great way to get a second shot at the one that got away!
